Hi Susan,

Yes, I think that you should get genetic testing. There is a group in Texas that was doing genetic testing as part of a study on AD's. I am not sure if it is still going on but you might try e-mailing: van.tran.1@UTH.tmc.edu. My mother died from an AD and I suffered a decending AD 12 days after she died. My daughters were tested through echograms to see if they were currently at risk. Men are at a higher risk for AD's than women. If the genetic testing is no longer occuring at University of Texas, than at the very least your children should be tested through an echo or CT to see what their current conditions are. Blood Pressure, stress, smoking and genetics can all lead to AD's. If you have any other concerns, I'm not an expert but have been living with an AD for over 4 years. You may reach me a kenk@wi.rr.com. In the mean time, hang in there and take care.

I have been newly diagnosed with a small aortic dissection T8-11 at age 63yo, the dissection occured sometime in the past and I've been asymptomatic. My father had a complete descending aortic dissection and replacement graft when he was around 65yo, his brother,my uncle, had an ascending aortic dissection at about the same age. My brother recently had a complete Type B Aortic Dissection at 59yo which prompted my screening. I am very concerned for my children and a grandchild who is but 3 months old. I need information. . . I know that, despite the fact that I am an RN this has caught me totally unprepared. My blood pressure is under control with medication, I've been hypertensive since my second pregnancy at 36yo. My cholesterol is under 200. Still what do I tell my children. . . .should we get genetic testing?

Hey Greg, It was great to read your story, well not great that it happened to you but a great read. I myself had an aortic dissection, but it was in the asscending part of my aorta and I also had to have a aortic heart valve replacement done as well, due to a bicuspid aortc valve. I know what youmean by the tuff guy statement. I was a pretty decent high school football and baseball player, but my biggest love was powerlifting. I competed in competitions all over the United States, nad usually won the mojority of the ones i entered. One of the questions all my doctors had for me was what kind of steroids did you use, and my response was always none of them. Every competiotion I entered was 100% drug free and we were tested everytime. It is truly a helpless feeling durning the dissection, because i had no control of what was going on. And now I live everyday with restrictions of the weight i can lift, my docs say no more than 50 to 75 lbs for the rest of my life. I had a friend tell me one day man that must really suck not being able to work out like that anymore and I told him no it's fine with me. What would really suck is not being able to see my two little girls who are 13 and 9 now, and not seeing my beautifull wife. I donmt know about you, but my relationship whth my wife was always great, but after the surgery seeing her there everyday and all that she went through during this just made me love her even more. Well I've took up enough of your time, have a great day and God bless,

What a story. May god always bless you. I have just started the Venus closure processs. Did not like the ace bandages either. I have been on a long journey of getting healthy. I have just got the nerve to do the venus closure. This was the last on my list. Heart disease is attacking my family quickly. I havequit smoking, lost a ton of weight (the good old fashion way...bust the body and watche what you eat). My second chance at life is not quite the same story as yours but I have a true understanding of how you must feel to have a second chance. I feel in some ways I have mine. Except for the legs...all other physicals are smooth sailing (no meds). What a blessing. Though, I wonder if there is link the legs to the heart? If a problem with one is a calling card to the other? From one blessed person to another blessed person. Always have a wonderful life and appreciate every moment, and LIVE every moment to it's fullest. Thanks for sharing your story.

I found your site as I am interviewing with Philips and your site came up when did a web search about their interview process.

I am sorry about how you have been treated recently by companies. I admire and respect how you have chosen to be optimistic and I have no doubt that you will soon find a position that you enjoy for a company that values you.

I just recently have had emergency valve replacement surgery and an ascending aortic aneurism repaired. I am only 40 and this was most certainly a wake up call for me to start living life to the fullest. I always knew life was short but did not realize how short it could be. I am very thankful and greatful to have been given this second chance at life, and if it weren't for God, my family and friends, I would not be here today!!

Happy Birthday and God Bless and keep you safe in his care. I have been reading aorticdissection website since Jan 9th, 2008. My mom has a dissection my space is dedicated to her. She is alive today because God is healing her body. Keep your faith in God nothing is impossible for him
